Tino Reka Te Kai – Matariki Dish Challenge

          Back for its fifth year Waikato Food Inc’s 2019 Tino Reka te Kai Matariki Dish Challenge is once again putting the Waikato and New Zealand cuisine on the map.  Each winter local chefs sharpen their knives and create a dish celebrating both Matariki (Māori New Year) and Waikato produce. From 9am - 9pm daily from 8 June - 14 July at various restaurants throughout Waikato.

He Muri Aroha – An exhibition by Atawhai Edwards in celebration of Matariki ki Waikato The exhibition acknowledges the start of the new dawn and a time to gather with whaanau and friends and celebrate what has been and what is to come. Matariki Kite Day

This free fun event encourages Whānau (families) to share lessons in kite making, flying Manu tukutuku and Peter Lyn paper kites. All material will be provided to make your kite. These activities provide many opportunities to discuss the significance of Matariki and the Māori New Year. Te Manawa o te Whaariki is the biennial membership exhibition of Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa (the National Weavers Collective), hosted in partnership with the Waikato weavers' roopu, Ngaa Hua o te Rito. Established in 1983 Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa sought to revive the traditional arts of weaving.
